• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Revelstoke, British Columbia.
Scenic mountain parks, translucent lakes and rivers, and intriguing museums and lively plazas are just a few the attractions to include on a Revelstoke vacation. Whether visiting the city in the dead of winter or in the middle of the summer, the selection of sights and attractions to squeeze into a visit to Revelstoke is always extensive.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Surrounded by captivating alpine scenery, it comes as no surprise that a plethora of Revelstoke's sights and attractions are located in the great outdoors. The area is blessed with lush green parks and gardens such as Mount Revelstoke National Park and Glacier National Park, where visitors can admire spectacular vistas on invigorating hikes.

The city also boasts a variety of smaller parks ideal for family afternoon outings such as Williamson Lake and Park, which has a children's playground and a lake for water activities. The manmade Lake Revelstoke serves as the city's reservoir and is a great place to boat, fish and revel in the views of the Selkirk Mountains and the Monashee Mountains.

Although the pools at Canyon Hot Springs Resort are located outside amidst snow-peaked mountains, visitors are guaranteed to stay toasty warm as they take a relaxing soak. The resort's hot mineral soaking pool is heated at the inviting temperature of 40 °C (104 °F), while the swimming pool is a little cooler at 32 °C ( 86 °F).

INSIGHTFUL MUSEUMS

Revelstoke offers a diverse collection of museums, which each share an interesting slice of the community's and Canada's past. A good place to start exploring the city's history is at the Revelstoke Museum and Archives. Housed inside a 1926 federal building, the Revelstoke museum offers insight into the area's social, industrial and environmental history through an assortment of artifacts and documents.

Locomotive enthusiasts will be thrilled with the Revelstoke Railway Museum, which tracks the nation's railway history and heritage from the early construction of the railway in Canada to present-day train operations. The restored CPR locomotive #5468 (a large steam train originally built in 1948), CPR china and silverware, railway gear, tools and an extensive collection of photographs are a few of the exhibits inside the railway museum.

Other highlights in Revelstoke's museum scene include the collection of Victorian musical boxes at the Revelstoke Nickelodeon Museum, Revelstoke's first fire truck at the Firefighters Museum and the 1956 Hayes logging truck at the BC Interior Forestry Museum.

INTERACTIVE INTERPRETIVE CENTRES & HISTORIC SITES

In addition to bundle of museums, Revelstoke also offers fascinating historic sites and interpretive centres. The Revelstoke Dam Visitor Centre is a major tourist attraction with its exhibits and interactive displays on the building of the dam and hydro electricity. Visitors can get a true sense of the magnitude of the Revelstoke Dam by concluding their tour at the centre's lookout point, which overlooks the 175-m (574-ft) high concrete dam.

Tourists interested in Revelstoke's architectual gems like the neoclassical Revelstoke Court House and the Art Moderne-inspired Revelstoke City Hall can embark on a self-guided walking tour. Brochures with information on the city's historical buildings and with suggested self-guided walking tour routes are available at several outlets around the city such as the Revelstoke Visitor Centre.

Visitors can also get a taste of a gold rush at Three Valley Gap Heritage Ghost Town. Just 19 km (12 mi) west of Revelstoke, the ghost town transports visitors to the pioneer days of the 1800s in western British Columbia with over 25 restored historic buildings.

VIBRANT ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT SCENE

A hub for music, theatre, festivals and markets, there's always something going on in Revelstoke's Grizzly Plaza. This bustling downtown plaza is an endless source for live entertainment with everyone from upcoming bands to magic acts taking the stage on warm summer evenings.

On Saturday mornings Grizzly Plaza is especially busy as shoppers browse stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, baked goods, crafts and other local foods and gifts at the Revelstoke Farmers' Market.

Another artistic outlet that always buzzes with activity is the Revelstoke Visual Art Centre, which houses the Revelstoke Public Art Gallery and a bundle of art groups. The visual art centre offers changing exhibits, on-site studios, art classes and programs.
